PHOENIX (June 2, 2005) – Congratulations! So you have just adopted a new “child” made of fur and four legs. You have puppy-proofed your home to ensure it is free of things that can harm your new friend. You bought him a new collar and leash, food and water bowls, and all the grooming supplies. You even remembered the toys, because chewing comes naturally to a dog. Now you're hoping the new pet's transition into your home will be warm and fuzzy. Unfortunately, it is rarely that simple.

Some pets are more adaptable than others. Regardless of your pet's history, coming home with you is likely to be a bit disorienting. A new pet can withdraw, act anxious or nervous, bark or whine excessively when left alone. New environments and people can be upsetting and introductions to children and pets already in your home can be frightening -- causing Fido or Felix to misbehave or cower in a corner.

To help the situation, Farnam Pet Products has introduced a veterinarian-developed, revolutionary pet behavior management line for dogs and cats. Comfort Zone® with D.A.P.® (Dog Appeasing Pheromone), and Feliway® for cats, provides an effective way to control unwanted pet behavior associated with the fear and stress that come from unfamiliar surroundings.

Comfort Zone with D.A.P. is a synthetic pheromone that mimics the natural appeasing pheromone released by mother dogs to reassure her puppies. The pheromones are undetectable by humans, and nontoxic to people and animals. Comfort Zone with Feliway for cats mimics the feline's positive facial pheromones, reassuring and comforting both kittens and adult cats.

“Puppies and kittens, as well as older dogs and cats adopted from shelters, often experience problems when they join a new family and environment,” said Tammy Senter, division manager for Farnam's behavior modification products. “The new addition can be disconcerting for the pet already in residence as well. The result can lead to behavior problems in both, such as urine-marking and vertical scratching in cats, and excessive barking, and other misdeeds in dogs. The Comfort Zone pheromones are great tools to help battle these behavioral problems and take control before they get out of hand.”

As the Comfort Zone pheromones are released into the environment, a more comfortable atmosphere is created in your home. This helps relieve the tension, and ease the transition for your new pet. Comfort Zone is effective on full grown pets a well as adolescents and helps create a better training situation as your new pet gets to know you better.

Comfort Zone with D.A.P. has been clinically proven to reduce destructive behavior in 86 percent of dogs and excessive barking in 70 percent. Studies show Comfort Zone with Feliway has a 95 percent success rate in reducing or eliminating two of the most common problems in cats – urine marking and vertical scratching. Both lines are available in a spray or plug-in diffuser with refills.

“Comfort Zone offers a solution that can comfort pets as they acclimate to their new surroundings, helping them feel safe and reassured in their new homes,” Senter said.

Pet owners can ask their Veterinarian about D.A.P. and Feliway or go to PETsMART, Petco, and other specialty pet stores and look for Comfort Zone with D.A.P. and Comfort Zone with Feliway. Both are also available online from Drs. Foster & Smith.
